Interesting web sharing trends
What is the best time to publish your posts? What is the most popular method of sharing content? Well if you are looking for the answers, read further.
AddThis recently highlighted some interesting findings on web sharing trends, by analyzing its five years’ (2006-2010) worth of data. While the data may not give the complete sharing picture, it’s still worth checking out considering AddThis claims to be the largest content sharing platform on the web, used by 10 million websites and reaches 1.2 billion users each month.
Maybe we can learn something from those findings, like how do people share content on the web? When do they share it? What are the most popular social media sharing sites? etc.
Below are some of the findings:
Top sharing times
- Peak hour: Peak sharing occurs at 9:30am EST (14:30 GMT) every day.
- Peak Day: Wednesdays are the peak days for sharing.
When do people click?
- Most users click 2 minutes after the content is shared.
- 75% of clicks occur within the first day of a share.
Top shares growth all time
- Twitter: 35,356%
- Facebook & Like: 5,809%
- LinkedIn: 3,226%
- StumbleUpon: 2,912%
- Tumblr: 1,142%
Past year (2010) growth
Trending Up | Trending Down |
Facebook Send: 756% | iGoogle: -68% |
Tumblr: 532% | AOL Lifestream: -63% |
Google +1: 418% | MySpace: -53% |
PingFM: 272% | Delicious: -46% |
LinkedIn: 243% | Digg: -46% |
Most sharing happens via URL copy-paste
Still most sharing is done by copying URLs directly from the address bar to emails, IMs and other social channels. This method is used up to 10 times more than sharing tools.
Enjoy!

ermm..nice info..
thanks again
This is very interesting. I'm not surprised to see the digg stats going down. I used to use that site, but stopped years ago. It's not user friendly at all - even though I heard it has changed a lot since then.
Surprised at SU. I get a lot of my traffic from there, so I thought it was the top one trending where shares are concerned. I'm also surprised at the copy-paste scenario. This means having fancy share options on your page isn't that important.
BTW, the message above this comment panel is unreadable. There's red and black writing, none of which I can see because they all bleed into each other. Just thought you'd like to know.
How do we add links to this post And show the people who have added the link
SALAM,
WELL THEN, CAN I SHARE THIS? :)

"Most sharing happens via URL copy-paste" - hmmm....I do the same thing here...mostly I do ctrl C + Ctrl V action.
Hi thanks for sharing this nice info.
Actually I was not aware of the importance of timing in Blogging.
Please bear in mind that those figures came from AddThis's US stats. Please do not expect people in other parts of the world to have similar habits with users in the US. :)
@HomeBiss
Those were woldwide figures, not just from the US. But since the majority its users are from the US, I guess the trends do mirror that of the US.
@Greenlava
Oh, really. I'm sorry. I guess I must have read the wrong report over at AddThis.
